Los Angeles, CA, United States (AHN) – “Avatar” is heading back to theaters in 3-D and IMAX 3-D for the few folks who missed it the first time around (and didn’t catch it on DVD/Blu-ray) or for those who really want to take that trip back to Pandora on the big screen.

“Avatar: Special Edition” is currently set to hit IMAX screens for a two-week run on August 27th with 8 additional minutes of footage. The new extended edition is also sure to be released on DVD and Blu-ray in time for Christmas.
Sam Worthington told Collider that he’s unsure what’s being worked back into the already 162 minute-film, but he says there was hours of footage left on the cutting room floor.
“[Cameron] hasn’t told us. There’s a couple of extra hunting scenes. There’s a much-speculated and blogged sex scene everyone keeps f—ing harping on about. To be honest, I think everyone’s going to be disappointed that’s it’s not blue porn,” Worthington said. “But there’s a lot of other character parts. Giovanni [Ribisi] stuff and Stephen Lang stuff. So it’s up to Jim. I know Jim would only release it if it enhanced the story by putting it back in.”
”I wish we added eight hours,” he continued. “I think the first cut I saw was about six hours long.”
The film was originally released last December 18th, before it lost many of its 3-D and IMAX screens to Disney’s “Alice in Wonderland” in March. The film has grossed over $2.7 billion worldwide.
