The Hurt Locker Best Picture?  After picking up two awards in the sound editing category, where it went up against Avatar, could the box-office bomb end up winning Best Picture against Avatar?  The Hurt Locker is now leading the Oscar count with 3 awards, two in the sound category, and one for screenplay.  Precious, which is also nominated for best picture, has picked up two oscars in the evening so far.

The Hurt Locker Best Picture, could it be?

Critics have generally assumed that the best picture race will come down to Avatar and The Hurt Locker, even though the category has been expanded to ten this year.

There is still a lot of the program left.

The first of the Oscar Winners received his little golden man about 20 minutes into the program.

Christoph Waltz won the first award for Best Supporting Actor in Inglorious Basterds.  He thanked Quentin Terrantino for his “Unorthodox” story telling style during his acceptance speech.  Amongst the other nominees, he beat out Matt Damon for his roll as the rugby captain of the South African Rugby team during reconciliation and the first years of the post-apartheid government and Nelson Mandela (played by Morgan Freeman).

Up was the second winner, winning Best Animated Feature.

The song “the weary kind” won from Crazy Heart for best song.

Star Trek won for Best Makeup.

Precious won for the best adapted screenplay, beating out Up in the Air.  Both films are nominated for best picture.  Monique also won for her best supporting roll in Precious.

Avatar, nominated for 9 awards, has so far won one award, for art direction.

Many categories have yet to be announced: best picture, best actor, best actress, best director, best foreign film, best adapted film.  Jeff bridges is the favorite for best actor; sandra bullock is one of the favorites for best actress and Monique is the favorite for best supporting actress.
