“The Dude Abides” were the famous words of the mysterious cowboy in the Cohen brother’s cult classic The Big Labowski.  Indeed, the Dude Abides.

Jeff Bridges just won his first Oscar for best actor, for his role in Crazy Heart.

The Dude Abides

Jeff Bridges, the favorite for the Best Actor Award, is the Best Actor winner.  Perhaps best known for his role as “the dude” in the Cohen brothers Cult Classic the Big Labowski, he won this year for Crazy Heart, and got a long standing ovation.  He first yelled out to “mom and dad” and thanked them for the “groovy profession.”

Competing for tonight’s Best Actor Oscar were Jeff Bridges (the favorite) from  Crazy Heart; George Clooney, from Up in the Air; Colin Firth from A Single Man; Morgan Freeman from Invictus; and Jeremy Renner from The Hurt Locker.  Former and current co-stars announced the nominees, and spoke about each of their backgrounds in a new type of presentation.

Freeman has been nominated for oscars twice before — first for his role in Driving Miss Daisy and later for the Shawshank Redemption.  Bridges and Clooney have also already been nominated once.  None of the three has ever won an award before.

Nine leading men have won the little golden man twice.  Sean Penn was the most recent addition to the twice-over category, for his roll as Harvey Milk in Milk.

The Best Actor announcement usually comes towards the end of the program, which could be as late as 10 or 11 pm eastern time.

The first of the Oscar Winners received his little golden man about 20 minutes into the program.

Christoph Waltz won the first award for Best Supporting Actor in Inglorious Basterds.

Up was the second winner, winning Best Animated Feature.

The song “the weary kind” won from Crazy Heart for best song.

Star Trek won for Best Makeup.

Precious won for the best adapted screenplay, beating out Up in the Air.  Both films are nominated for best picture.  Monique also won for her best supporting roll in Precious.  The film currently leads with two little golden men.

Avatar, nominated for 9 awards, has won three awards, as has the Hurt Locker.

Many categories have yet to be announced: best picture, best actress, best supporting actress, best director, best foreign film, best adapted film.  Avatar and the Hurt Locker are the favorites for best picture; James Cameron is the favorite for best director for the blockbuster hit Avatar; Jeff bridges is the favorite for best actor; sandra bullock is one of the favorites for best actress and Monique is the favorite for best supporting actress.
