Super Bowl 2011 Score / Result / Highlights: Green Bay Win
Welcome to the Super Bowl 2011 live coverage, syndicated from SportingOpinions.com! We’ll be providing constant updates including Superbowl score and highlights and live blog of all the action. Be sure to keep updating for a stream of commentary from our liveblog.
5:42PM – Just over 45 minutes left until Super Bowl 2011 kickoff. NFL GamePass (we’ve decided to watch the Superbowl online this year) is currently showing the NFL calendar swimsuit shoot – which is all good and dandy, but we would have preferred some footage from the arena or any kind of pre-game hype to be honest.
5:47 PM – Ok, now there’s a bunch of NFL ads which we have seen over a thousand times – it’s been said that during the match there will be upwards of 40 minutes of ads that we will have to endure… so this really is becoming the Ad Bowl this year for me.
5:55 PM – Just checked Twitter to see where the buzz was – obviously the Super Bowl is the number 1 trending topic.
5:57 PM – I look at Google Trends to see what people are searching…lots of people seem to have no idea when the match kicks-off! Apparently FOX is accepting hundreds of millions for airing commercials, but haven’t spent any of that promoting the kickoff time.
6:25 PM: Ok, just minutes left until kickoff and NFL Game Pass (NFL’s official streaming service and the only way to watch Super Bowl online) is still not showing anything! Must. Not. Panic.
6:28 PM: Just to make it official, my Super Bowl 2011 prediction is as follows: the game ends up being one of the most low scoring games of all time with neither QB able to get through with a touchdown until the 4th quarter. Aaron Rodgers pulls through in the final stretch of the game with a touchdown that wins the Packers the championship and himself the official title of the best young QB in the game.
6:31 PM: Yes!! Finally coverage beings with an awesome promo with the voice of Michael Douglas. “This game is much bigger than a football game” is the quote and MLK soundbites are used.
6:33 PM: Dion Sanders gets a huge cheer for the coin flip.
6:34 PM: Pittsburgh call tails – it’s heads and the crowd goes wild, Pittsburgh to receive as Green Bay .
6:39 PM: First drive of the game is 3 and out for Big Ben.
6:40 PM: The Packers drop the ball on the punt return but manage to recover it.
6:44 PM: 24 yard completion by Aaron Rodgers on 3rd and 9 – he’s been clutch all postseason on 3rd downs.
6:46 PM: Aaron Rodgers goes for another long distance throw on the next 3rd down, but no cigar this time against the NFL’s best defense.
6:49 PM: 2 nice carries by the Steelers. 5 yard penalty on the offense for a false start. 2 and out this time, possession back to the Packers. My prediction is holding true so far.
6:55 PM: Oops forgot to pay attention in the last 2 ad breaks…that’s 50 million dollars down the drain.
6:53 left in the first, Packers take time out with first down and quite a way to go.
6:54: Bud light advert, boring.Chevy advert, boring. Fast and Furious sequel (Fast Five) new trailer, looks ok.
7:01: Cameron Diaz in the stands
7:03: Aaron Rodgers manages to complete a pass and for the first time a team is in the opposing teams half. Packers are at the Steelers 37.
7:04: Aaron Rodgers gets hit, 3rd and one and he goes for the big throw again… resulting in a Nelson touchdown following a 80 yard drive.. 7-0.
7:06: Hyundai gets all subliminal in their ad…is that even legal??
7:07: 44 yard Pittsburgh return erased due to flag.
7:08: Cowboys and Aliens trailer looks pretty cool, starring Harrison Ford as a cowboy once again.Really high budget Kia Optima ad wins some points in my book.
7:10: Ben’s throw gets intercepted, probowler NickCollins catches around the 35 yard line and manages to return for a touchdown. 14-0.
7:11: Eminem’s new Pepsi ad: he’s his usual ‘bad boy’ self but in clay form (ala MTV Celebrity Deathmatch).
7:13: 13 yard return by the Steelers, they’re at the 35 yard line with mountains to climb to get back in this game.
7:14: Those 14 Green Bay points occurred in a 24 second stretch!
7:16: Pittsburgh manage to make it to the Packers half for the first time in the game after a 3rd and 9 that has Roethlisberger running for 18 yards ( at 3 miles per hour!) with his bad knee. We can see Roethlisberger’s Super Bowl experience come into play.
7:19: Bridgestone ad about forwarding emails. Another Chevrolet ad. Godaddy new girl teased for a while with hot body shots, and it ends up being…..JOAN RIVERS! Ugh, I feel dirty and cheated.
7:21: Steelers at the Packers 35 yard line, 3rd and 12, but Roethlisberger gets the first down with the pass to Sanders.
7:23: Roethlisberger goes for another run, but seriously…that’s as slow as I’ve seen a professional sport run..like in any sport! 3rd and 7.
7:26: Don’t get the first down and go for a field goal. 14-3.
7:27: Old western Bud ad, yawn. Teleflora flowers ad..pretty funny. Transformers 3 action sequence ad…simply awesome, but they didn’t need an ad to make me go see their movie. :)
7:29: Motorola Xoom tablet ad that makes no sense…you’re not going to beat the iPad with something like that. BMW Advanced Diesel ad, meh.
7:33: Steelers get it back, down 11.
7:35: Another commercial break….really feel like I’m watching more ads than football here. Thor trailer looks good, now they’re showing that Volkswagen Star Wars ad that got 12million views on YouTube.
7:36: Steelers get a 10 yard penalty for holding, cancelling a nice run. Things are not going Pittsburgh’s way at the moment. 1st and 20.
7:38: 2 nice plays (one throw, one rush) get Pittsburgh the first down.
7:39: Roethlisberger goes for another run, he’s getting slower everytime..he’s about to go backwards.2nd and 5 at the Steelers 40.
7:41: Randel El catches a tough throw and once again the Steelers are in the Packers’ half.
7:42: Snickers commercial with a woman getting hit by a tree, careerbuilder.com ad, and a Steven Spieberg produced new trailer ‘Super 8′..looks like E.T. 2 .
7:44: Bush intercepts a dangerous pass by Roethlisberger, Packers ball at midfield.
7:47: Couple of nice runs by the Packers and they’re already in the red zone.
7:48: 21 yard pass by Rodgers to Jennings and it’s 21-3.
7:51: 37 yard pass gets the Steelers a good chance to score before the end of the first half.
7:52: Another Marvel movie trailer: this time Captain America…yes that’s a guarantee blockbuster hit right there. Carmax has a funny ad making fun of the ‘kid at a candy story’ saying.
7:54: Sam Shields leaves injured.
7:55: 1:54 left in the half, 40 yards to go for the Steelers who have two time outs left.
7:57: Big first down by the Steelers with 3rd and 10. They’re in the redzone now, 1 timeout remaining, 1:37 on the clock.
8:03: 18 yard completion sets up 1st and goal. Next play, Roethlisberger finds Ward in the end zone. Packers 21-10 Steelers.
8:04: Packers don’t take any risks and first half ends 21-10 in favor of the Packers. Time for the Super Bowl Halftime show starring the Black Eyed Peas. I’ll use this time to for a small break.
8:10: No team has ever come back from 10 points down to win the Super Bowl.
8:12: Black Eyed Peas start with “Tonight’s gonna be a good night” song remix surrounded by hundreds of synchronized dancers dressed in white around them.
8:13: Ok, lights have turned off and apparently they weren’t white suits those dancers were wearing but neon light uniforms. They’re doing cool stuff with the formation of all these dancers.
8:15: Slash comes out of nowhere and shreds a sick solo and manages to make it blend with the Black Eyed Peas music.
8:17: Now User is out, also wearing white. There’s definitely a futuristic look and feel to this year’s halftime show.
8:18: Usher and Will.i.am working well together.
8:21: Black Eyed Peas, in case you didnt notice, have ALOT of hits…and they’re playing them back to back, which is decent music I guess.
8:22: Big love heart signs on the NFL pitch…I’m not sure how this is going to go down.
8:25: Halftime show is finally over. Crowd is going bonkers for some reason. Don’t like to include personal tastes in here, but that was one of the worst halftime shows ever. Just a bunch of recycled songs delivered with no heart. (Fergie can’t sing to save her life). End of rant.
8:26: By the way Glee’s Thriller episode is airing following Super Bowl 2011 and I want to make it clear that we will absolutely NOT be live blogging that.
8:32: Ok, second half is finally back underway – Packers start off with a penalty. 1st and 20 deep inside their half.
8:37: Rodgers manages to make it 3rd and 5 but James Jones drops a pass that would have most likely led to a touchdown. Steelers have possession.
8:39: Packers get 15 yard penalty on the punt return, Steelers will start with good field position.
8:40: Ok we finally got to see the Bieber/Osbourne BestBuy ad. It promotes their Buy back program and has Osbourne confused about all sorts of technology terms. Funny end where a member of the Osbourne family says Bieber ‘looks like a girl’.
8:43: Ben gets another good run, it’s 3rd and 1.
8:44: Packers get another good run (16 yards), and are inside the 10. First and goal.
8:45: Touchdown! It’s 21-17 and the Steelers are right back in it. RASHARD MENDENHALL with touchdown.
8:46: More ads…I’m beginning to get sick of these. Pirate of the Carribean ad, followed by HomeAway ad which is supposed to be one of the more controversial ads this year.
8:47: Sergeant Salvatore Guinta received medal of honor – good moment amid all the faux-celebrities, obscene adverts that have taken over this broadcast.
8:49: Largest deficit ever that a team has come back from in the Super Bowl is 10 points. The Steelers were down 18.
8:50: The Steelers fans have taken over and it’s starting to feel like a road game for Aaron Rodgers.
8:51: Rodgers goes down at the 15th. Tim Masthay punts it short, and Steelers have it near midfield. The momentum has shifted!
8:52: Hyundai has another really trippy ad…someone has to look if their practices are legal…Coca-Cola just had an ad and I can’t really say I understood what happened. I think I’ve officially overdosed from commercials.
8:55: It’s 3rd and one for Big Ben. Time out…you know what that means
8:56: Adrien Brody has just taken over my screen. Worst thing is he’s actually promoting the finest product that I’ve seen today – Stella Artois Belgian beer.
8:57: George W Bush is at the game!
8:58: Big Ben is on fire right now, huge play after huge play. The Steelers are at the Packers 30. First down, 5:50 left in the third.
9:02: Uh oh Ben’s in the tough 3rd down and 13 spot, and he eats the first sack of the day. They have to go for the FG instead, and miss…by a mile.
9:03: Eminem driving a Chrysler to the beat of ’8 Mile’ in the background. “This is Motor City, and this is what we do” he says. Ok.
9:05: First play, Rodgers completes an 18 yard throw and already they’re 40 yards away from making this a 2 possession game.
9:07: 3rd and 8 for the Packers. Steelers take their second timeout..
9:08: Rodgers goes for a big play on 3rd down, but doesn’t work this time. Possession goes back to Pittsburgh. 2:23 left in the 3rd.
9:10: 3rd and 2 at the Steelers 20…this is going to be a tough drive even for the 2 time Super Bowl champ QB.
9:11: Nope, doesn’t happen and Steelers punt it. Flag thrown.
9:14: Packers start their drive on their own 13. It’s already 3rd and 10 with the quarter about to end.
9:15: Really weird play where Packers looked like they’d picked up the first down, then it looked like a fumble, but instead was called incomplete. The Packers decide to challenge the call.
9:19: Referees still reviewing the play…this is the first real break I’ve had all night. :)
9:20 Pass incomplete, challenge denied. It will be Steelers ball at the start of the 4th.
9:23: Ad time. Really cool montage of clips from some of the biggest TV shows involving the Super Bowl. Ends with “Best. Fans. Ever”. Abit ironic that the best ad of the night was created and paid for by the NFL themselves.
9:27: Fourth quarter stars and first play the Packers get the ball back after a fumble. That’ll teach fans to go to the toilet during 3 million dollar commercials.
9:31: Aaron Rodgers is missing a lot of passes today, more misses than we’ve seen from him this whole postseason. HIs receivers have also dropped a few which haven’t helped things.
9:32: Once again though Rodgers comes though on the 3rd down with a huge play, and now it’s 1st and goal, with probably the championship on the line.
9:33: Rodgers is sacked, 2nd and goal from the 15.
9:34 Rodgers finds Jennings in the end zone. TOUCHDOWN. It’s 28-17.
9:36: By the way MVP voting is now open…just saying.
9:37: Story of the game: 3 turnovers by the Steelers have led to 21 points for the Packers.
9:40 Rio and Ringo – two new animated movies that were advertised in the last 5 minutes. Both look like every other animated movie ever made.
9:41: Ben is starting to play with a sense of urgency, already the Steelers are in the Packers half. Just 10 minutes left though, Roethlisberger needs to make things happen and there’s no room for error with the Packers defense.
9:42: Steelers receive a 10 yard penalty making it 1st and 20 with 35 yards to go to the endzone.
9:43: 2nd and 18..uh oh.
9:44: The Steelers get a lifeline with a 15 yard play. 3rd and 3 now at the 25.
9:46: Wow! Wallace catches the pass on the third down and scores. 28-23.
9:47: Steelers go for a 2 point conversion and get it! 28-25. With 7:34 left! What a ball game.
9:50: Return of 17 yards for the Packers. In case you haven’t noticed, I’ve stopped paying attention to the commercials…I think 100 ads in 2 hours is my personal limit.
9:59: Packers get within 9 yards of the endzone but in the end have to settle for a FG. Packers 31-25 Steelers.
10:00: So 2 minutes left in the game and Roethlisberger has his teams fate in his hands. Can he get his 3rd Super Bowl championship?
10:06: Kim Kardashian’s sexy ad SHOULD NOT, I repeat SHOULD NOT be shown with 2 minutes left in the Super Bowl with the game on the line…that’s just not right.
10:08: Steelers start at their 13, but immediately get a 15 yard play.
10:09: Ben is playing hurry up offense, with the clock and season winding down…it’s as good as it gets.
10:10 : 4th and 5 with 56 seconds left. Is it all over?
10:11: Pass incomplete, there was some contact..but no call. 49 seconds left and Packers get the ball back and barring a catastrophe for the ages, they’re the 2011 Super Bowl Champions.
10:12: It’s all over the 6th seeded Green Bay Packers are your 2011 Super Bowl champions.

Preview
This week Arlington, Texas is the final destination for thousands of devoted pilgrims. These men and women have travelled across the country to support their idols, but this is not religion; It’s much more important than that. This is football, American style.
Super Bowl Preview: Pittsburgh Steelers vs Green Bay Packers
The Green Bay Packers and Pittsburgh Steelers, two of the most historically successful and storied teams in the National Football League will go head-to-head in the 45th Super Bowl, and the matchup could not be more even.
Pittsburgh have won the NFL’s biggest prize twice in the last six years, and their quarterback Ben Roethlisberger is hoping to become one of a tiny group of players to lead a team to three Super Bowl rings.
The Green Bay Packers have Aaron Rodgers as their quarterback, a man who many believe is the future of the league. Rodgers spent several years as the backup to Brett Favre, Green Bay’s football icon, but a win in Sunday’s game could see him silence critics who have remained loyal to Wisconsin’s favourite son.
Battles will take place up and down the pitch, with the red hot Green Bay offense taking on Pittsburgh’s infamous ‘wall of steel’ defence. Rodgers and Green Bay have played all of their post-season matches on the road so far this season, and this has brought their team closer together.
Whether Rodgers wins his first Super Bowl ring, or Roethlisberger picks up his third, Super Bowl Sunday promises to be an amazing spectacle. The Cowboy Arena in Texas will be packed with 110,000 fans – but there will only be one winner. Who have you got?
