Real Life Sleeping Beauty

Louisa Ball, a 15 year-old girl from Britain is a real life Sleeping Beauty, but it’s not as romantic as it sounds. The teenager often sleeps for more than ten days in a row, without waking – and nothing can rouse her from her slumber.

The young lady has not bitten an apple, however, but she has a medical condition called Kleine Levin syndrome, which can occur in teenagers and then naturally often goes away after eight or ten years.

Real Life Sleeping Beauty

The mother of the real life Sleeping Beauty said that the hardest part of her daughter having the condition is the unpredictability of it – and doctors agree.

“Sometimes it can be two weeks; sometimes it can be months. Occasionally people say, ‘That’s it; I’ve grown out of it because I haven’t had an episode for a year.’ And then it restarts.”

Smith’s long sleeps started after she came down with a case of the flu in 2008 – and they show now signs of stopping. Her longest sleep so far has been 15 days straight.

Although some people have accused the teenager of faking the condition to get attention, the father of the girl denies it vigorously. He points out that she is losing nearly a third of her life to the condition. Perhaps this real life Sleeping Beauty could do with a Prince Charming to treat her instead?
