The cracker of the iPhone and tech-guru George Hotz has claimed that he has made another breakthrough in opening up technology which is seen as unbreakable in the world of consumer electronics – he has cracked the PS3.

The Playstation 3 has been available for more than three years, and was seen as a bit target for hardware and software hackers and crackers due to its super high capacity Blu-Ray drive and super-fast processors. Progress on the security breach in the internet community has, however, been slow.

The lack of progress has mainly been down to a ‘root key’ – a type of master password which holds the combination to the gateway guarding the secrets of the gaming system.

Mr Hotz has said that the hack is 5% hardware based and 95% software – although details have yet to emerge about exactly how he did it. He has said that the entire process took him around five weeks, including research last summer for three weeks and then the final part recently. He added that it is a very secure system.

The hacker would not be drawn on the fact that his upcoming hack and details about it may give people the ability to play illegally copied games.

His previous hack of the iPhone operating system has proved extremely popular among phone users who were not willing to be forced into using one telephone provider.
