Newport State of Mind

The internet sensation that is Newport State of Mind is clocking up innumerable hits online and has gone fully viral. Full title Newport (Ymerodraeth State of Mind), the song is a parody of the collaboration between Jay-Z and Alicia Keys’ Empire State of Mind waxing lyrical about the greatness of New York. In this entirely tongue-in-cheek remix, a Welsh rapper and songstress parody the seriousness of the original song with incredibly witty lyrics about everyone’s new favourite Welsh town.

Newport State of Mind

Initially dreamt up by London based MJ Delaney, the director cast Alex Warren and Terema Wainwright as Jay-Z and Alicia Keys respectively and choose up and coming Director of Photography Vanessa Whyte to shoot the now global phenomenon. Much praise must also be lavished on Tom Williams of The Unexpected Items and Leo Sloley who helped shaped the perfect lyrics alongside MJ Delaney.

There could be a few complications down the road as the production team did not approach Jay-Z about copyright and royalties but given the rap supremo has used thousands of samples on his way to the top it would seem churlish of him to not to permit its continued existence on YouTube. For now, all those involved in the project are astonished by their success and view what has happened as entirely expected given they made this for fun. There is now a groundswell of opinion pushing for Newport (Ymerodraeth State of Mind) to be released as a single in the UK.

  • Louise & Jessica.

Absolutely amazing lyrics. From someone who’s from the area, it gives you a real connection. I Watched it over and over. Repeat to fade NEWPORT…

  • Great, with the gentle but subtle humour that is unique to South Wales.
