Modern Warfare 3 VS Battlefield 3
In these times of austerity, the perceived winner of Modern Warfare 3 VS Battlefield 3 will be more important than ever as gamers are likely to have to choose to buy one over the other. While reviews are a often the best guide, these days all reviews are subject to embargo, meaning that they will not go public until after the release date.
It is also harder to trust reviews as well, as it was widely reported that Activision flew a number of reviewers to America to enjoy a military themed weekend where they reviewed Call of Duty: Black Ops on a LAN. Only once the game was released did actual players realise how broken the multiplayer was, something that took over two months to get fully patched and functional.
Thankfully, Battlefield 3 has enjoyed a public open beta in which eight million players participated, allowing DICE to stress test their servers meaning multiplayer will hopefully run smoothly across all platforms from launch. Modern Warfare 3 will also enjoy dedicated servers on PC, which will go a long way to appease fans who maintain FPS is best experienced with mouse and keys.
Modern Warfare 3 VS Battlefield 3

The single player campaigns both look fantastic, with MW3 opting for a World War 3 storyline while BF3 centres on an Iran-Iraq border conflict. Modern Warfare 3 brings back the spectacular Spec-Ops mode which allows two player co-op in a series of challenges. In comparision, Battlefield 3 also features co-op missions based around the single player campaign, though it appears MW3′s Spec-Ops is more fully featured.
What most gamers really want to know is how both versions perform in multiplayer. MW2 was frenetic, competitive, all guns blazing action. The guns could be customised extensively and there were a number of loadouts that you could tailor to individual playstyle.
Modern Warfare 3 brings all of this back and more, with increased customisation important to the franchise. You can even purchase special unlocks to give your avator further individuality. Collecting the badges and callsigns through intriguing challenges made Modern Warfare 2 exceptionally enjoyable, but it did lead to a complete lack of teamplay.
This is something that the Battlefield series has in spades. The importance of a balanced squad working together, to spot enemies and manoeuvre effectively around the gamemap set the game apart from all competitors. Battlefield is much more strategic in its approach and teams can only win through coordination.
Possibly the biggest difference between the two games is the respawn timer. In most gamemodes, respawn is instant on Modern Warfare 3 while in Battlefield 3 you still have to wait around ten seconds to rejoin. This forces the player to be more considered in their decisions to engage and move around the map.
Battlefield 3 also features jets, tanks, humvees, stationary mounted weapons and helicopters to give a real scope to the game. Maps are gigantic and the player truly feels immersed in battle. For all Modern Warfare’s pace and action, the lack of vehicles or destructible scenery shows the series to be less innovative than Battlefield.
With both games to be released in the coming weeks, the Modern Warfare 3 vs Battlefield 3 contest wll be decided by sales as much as reviews and with Amazon posting pre-orders for BF3 up 2000% on BF2, it is clear that DICE’s game will push Activision’s all the way this year. Modern Warfare 3 has a release date of November 8, while Battlefield 3 will come out on October 25 in the US and October 28 in the rest of the world.

BATTLEFIELD 3 ALL THE WAYYYYYYYYYY!!!!
MW3 IS FOR KIDS
PSN NAME: sickbhoy1888
11:45 pm
mw3 is for kids yet ur still desperate and being a beg by posting you psn here, dont you have any friends to play with?
3:29 am
Like your any better stupid COD Fanboy.
3:54 am
You are both immature. Big evidence is your poor grammar. Battlefield 3 will win simply because it has a brand new engine unlike its competitors. (Ahem* Modern Warfare 3) the fact that Modern Warfare is boasting 60 FPS (Which has never changed since Call Of Duty 4) Just proves that they will keep living off of their old work, and they will never change the engine. Also Battlefield 3 supports strategy and that ensures very, very balanced and fair gameplay. Also 3 words; Tanks, Helicopters, Jets.
Case closed.
5:40 am
Mw3 is for highpitched hyperactive kids. bf3 gets my rocks off as bringing that adrenaline rush of combat to my living room. Amd for grammer boy up their. Fuckin nerd
9:14 am
I have to agree, I do hear alot of high pitched voices coming down my headset when am playing CoD. Hopefully there will be big manly voices down the headset in BF3. But all this hype might Attract the children to the game. However I am sure the PC version will remain child free because of the expence of getting a PC that can run it. You would have to be a working adult to afford that.
8:57 am
Truth is that BF3 is overwhelming with too many things going on at once. The vehicles are hard to maneuver and the maps are too big. Spawning takes longer and unless you have a large group of friends who are willing to play on your time you’ll be faced with a team of strangers who don’ t play well together, this equals frustration.
4:26 am
it pretty much like this if you want something that literally anybody can pick up and be good at and like shooting things MW3 will be your desired as the “plug and play” of video games
Where if you want something new and inovative Battlefeild with squad work and many different outcomes everytime you play there is much more cause just because you have a good hidding place …doesn’t mean shit against the apache Battlefeild 3 is the choice of the serious gamer who wants to try something different everytime they play
3:18 pm
dude I see you all the time on Black Ops lol….or maybe that is somebody else.
7:14 pm
MW3 forever
4:36 am
MW3 kicks bf3s ass
6:17 pm
Battlefield 3 requires team work and strategy. There is a longer term commitment required to improve your skills. communication and tactics.
MW3 is more about finding a good hiding spot and fast reflexes.
If you want a game you can pick-up play for half an hour and have a blast, go with MW3. If you want a game that takes time to master and is more complex to play, go with BF3.
8:38 pm
I agree Martin, MW3 is for kids, its kids who hate Battlefield because the game is to tough for them so they go back playing their Arcade shooter
9:03 am
Kids? I’m in my 30′s and I’ve played FPS’s since counter strike on pc, including Battlefield and it always disappoints. People who say Bf3 is better probably don’t do well on MW or COD. Unless you are in a clan, try playing with a bunch of strangers who don’t follow strategy as is required by BF3.
12:43 pm
I disagree, I am very good at cod, but find it too simple. I am much worse at BF3 than COD, but I still have more fun playing Battlefield. I give Kudo’s to COD’s franchise but their game has not changed since mwf 1. It is just new perks, kill streaks, and maps. It apparently works though.
7:26 pm
I’m going with Modern Warfare 3, but I’ll definitely be getting Battlefield, too, they are both spectacular games. Go with Modern Warfare 3 if you want some green, mean multiplayer. Go with Battlefield if you want kickass game mechanics!
10:28 pm
First rational CoD fan I have ever seen on the interwebs, thanks fo not being a douche. And yeah, go with what this guy said. I’ll only be getting BF3 however, CoD is too stale for me now…
11:44 pm
Both games look good, but what turned me off from bf was two things. Slow feel to movement, and having to put 30 shots on someone to kill them. If they changed that in bf3, I may buy it.
9:25 pm
It takes like 4 shots to kill someone now…
7:26 pm
No one should care about which game is better….. they are only games, if you argue over which is better… it clearly proves how sad you really are. Go with the game you really want to buy… and if you can afford both, then get both because they are awesome games.
5:39 am
The world is a sad place.
7:36 pm
Bull poop, bf3 is for hipsters who have to go against the majority, bf3 will lose to mw3 i’m certain
8:25 pm
Hipsters don’t even play video games. And BF3 has had a huge following for almost decade. People prefer it because its a better game. The maps are miles wide. The destruction is intense. The graphics are unbeatable. The vehicles are numerous. And DICE has proven itself again and again to be probably one of the best multiplayer developers in the world.
What has infinity ward done in the last few years?
8:42 am
besides beat out all games for the number one spot, as a game selling franchise while DICE sits on their ass cause it took them like 9 years to make a sequel finally?
all in all cod will beat out bf3, its to obvious but b3 is still gunna be fun…. for about a week or two till mw3 comes out. bf3 doesnt seem to have a lasting affect like most shooters
3:30 pm
Dice sat on their ass because they did not want to rush out a copy & paste video game that they shit on. It’s like a good piece of chicken breast; I would rather have a well cooked chicken breast than have a chef cook me something that is freakin raw and I can get poisoning off of because it was rushed. Dice will produce a good chicken breast for me to eat :D While IW will produce some more copied bland non sense.
2:46 pm
Dont pretend you know battlefield 3. Just because you see You tube videos glorifying the game and some biased good reviews means nothing. People had the same conception over Black Ops, and that game was a disaster. All im saying is dont get your panties in a bunch, just wait until the game is released, than make your decision. I know MW3 is gonna be action packed close quarter shooting, which quite frankly is awesome, doesn’t matter if its been done before. BF3 will be awesome as well but I need to make sure the EA servers are up to speed, because they weren’t in the Beta.
3:33 pm
Bro….it’s called a ‘beta’ for a good reason. To judge servers because the beta testing was choppy and glitchy is just stupid. Plus if you read the article they even mention the whole point of the beta testing and why EA did it.
4:59 am
I played battlefield 3 for atleast 3 hours everyday that the beta was up and running and never once did my lobby close or the match i was playing in get dropped because of the server. I’ve had every COD game that has been released (loved them all) and they’ve all had problems from time to time in this reguard. Yeah BF3 had some bugs to iron out but atleast the servers worked beautifully…
8:50 pm
My name explains it all. There’s not much difference between MW2 and MW3 multi-player wise anyway it’s a good game, but BF3 is 10 times better. Go and watch the game play videos and listen to what the testers have said. ;)
7:51 pm
You do have a point, BF3 is ten times better but, you use the wrong facts to back it up. Black Ops had amazing gameplay videos and awesome tester reviews, until you actually got to play it and use its shitty hit detection system.
9:33 pm
in terms of sales definitely but in terms of everything else, you cant deny bf3 will be incredible just look at the gameplay footage, its gonna be a huge step up for fps console games
1:17 am
You really have no idea what your talking about. The BF series has been around long before MW series, and hipsters? Most of the people that i play BF with are in there Mid to late 20′s to 50′s. I don’t know if hipsters fall in those age groups too much, but even so, most BF players i have come across are much more mature than the MW players i have had the misfortune to interact with.
2:51 am
That makes no sense….
Games are popular because they are great games..
Its obviously a matter of opinion on which is better, look at history.
Apple Computers was a hipster brand…now look at it…
So with that logic Battlefield is going to be number 1
7:40 pm
BF3 PLEASE!
7:48 pm
Fanboy war inbound!
8:41 pm
(MW3 IS FOR KIDS
PSN NAME: sickbhoy1888)
LMAO! Really? A kid saying a game is for kids?
The fanboys are going to ruin BF3, watch and see. There will be an epidemic of campers, as proved by the beta. So far every good comment about it has been from a 12 year old. Im considering canceling my pre order, because the players will ruin the online aspect of this game.
1:22 am
Jeff, do you even know the definition of defend? The open Beta, on console’s anyway, only gave Operation Metro in Rush form. In Rush, one side attacks, the other defends. The best way to defend an objective is to set a strong perimeter around the objective, and have a balanced defensive line before the perimeter. So when defending, camping out in a strategic perimeter is the way to go. Not like the countless players i saw in beta trying to spawnkill the attackers far from there own territory.
2:54 am
Agreed with Jesse.
There is a difference between Camping and Defense.
since Battlefield is a WAR simulator.. actual strategy is involved.
Brains vs Brawn. in this case Brains BF3. Brawn(Activision CoD campers)
7:50 pm
Dude, you talk about both games on a website dedicated to talking good about them… WTF!
8:58 pm
MW3 should be a very amazing game and i do believe that it will beat or tie Battlefield. Either way im still buying both. The only reason for that is some days i want fast-paced action and others i want to sit back, an relax with a slower team based game but im still buying both and have no fav.
9:00 pm
Going with the more tech game BF3. I like a more team style gameplay
9:10 pm
BF3 FTW!
MW3 has little innovation that I can see and the multiplayer is just so BORING; run around like a lunatic with a gun and shooting people on a chance encounter.
BF3 takes time and effort, and you actually feel like you’re part of a team. No more prevalent is this than when you play the assault class. At mid level the assault will be laying down suppressive fire and healing and ress-ing team mates. What’s more you get REWARDED for this! An assault with 2 kills who spend an entire match helping his fellow man can easily be in the top 3 spot.
COD games have relatively no incentive for teamwork whatsoever. You just lone wolf it, occassionally running into someone who DOESN’T die when you shoot them and realising that you are IN FACT on the same team. But then again you hardly notice this as you run blindly towards the sound gunfire.
Have fun in MW3, fanboys, but I’m sticking with team game ;)
1:31 am
Couldn’t agree with you more. MW/CoD games, and 75% of the shooters out there on console are more about who can shoot who first. Even if it is based on SOME skill, with no dedicated servers, hack/modder deterant programs, and the fact that alot depends on personal internet connections, those kinds of games seem to prove less about marksmanship and any kind of teamwork.
7:59 pm
Laugh as you may, I still support MW3 heavily because:
1. It has been around longer.
2. I only actually play MW3 with friends (unless their squeaker friends MUST come)
3. To me, I really just think it offers more customization to my unique playing style.
4. I don’t have to worry about joining a match on a team that i think has worse guns.
5. No matter how many times i cuss and yell at MW3, I would do the same with Battlefield (always getting pwned by snipers)
9:13 am
You guys are assuming that you will only find ” team players” on BF3. Really? Good luck! It is true that Battlefield has been around longer than MW and still can’t outsell it. I’ve given EA every chance on FPS’s , no more will they get my money unless it’s a sports game!
9:23 pm
Battlefield 3 requires team work, strategy, communication and tactics.
Modern Warfare 3 is more like a arcade shooter – requires fast reflexes to get kill streaks, knowing perks and being number 1 no matter what.
Honestly I will possibly get them both as either game looks great. I prefer playing BF over COD because it just seems to be more to do besides just running around in a small space. MW3 is like a pass time when I go to the movies and find a FPS in the arcade. Fast paced and explosions. I’ll have BF3 on Oct 25th and get MW3 on Greatest hits for $20 or less.
11:24 pm
MW3 for online play for sure. BF3 for campaign for sure. Soooooo I’m getting both!!
5:46 am
I think It’s the other way around. CoD games always have a great SP, While BF games have a great MP. My opinion. =]
11:51 pm
These are two completely different games. You might as well be talking about Skyrim vs. MW3. Most of the COD players aren’t going to like BF3. All of the COD players I know (including myself) tried the BF3 beta and just thought it was too slow and sluggish. BF3 is more about the immersive drawn out battle experience, which is nothing like MW3, which is more like a sport. These games are not direct competitors. Sure there will be some MW3 players who also enjoy BF3, but there might be some who like Uncharted 3, Skyrim, Saints Row 3, etc. Anyone who is looking for a replacement for the COD experience will not find it in BF3. Conversely, many BF vets hate the COD style games. It’s because they really are two different types of games. They both have war settings and involve guns, but the differences really end there.
12:52 pm
I disagree with this. If given time, players of COD will get to enjoy and learn the mechanics of Battlefield 3…It happened to me, and I was rocking COD.
8:02 pm
I agree with Michael Jackson (sadly) even though i like both, I still started with CoD and like its series better.
12:34 am
why does everyone have to be a cod fanboy if they like it??? if you feel like part of a team on battlefield but not on cod thats probably because ur NOT IN A TEAM ON COD! the guy above speaks sense
1:24 am
while everyone talks about the innovation in bf3 i fail to see it. sure you have this fancy new engine, but seriously if they added destruction to bf2 it would virtually be the same game. not that that’s a bad thing but i just don’t get the comments saying its a revolutionary step forward
1:59 am
You are a barsteward matt- you really are.
8:03 pm
And you need a dictionary you barsteward.
2:16 am
I’m getting ace combat cause I’m such a Hipster fake ghost for the win
3:12 am
mw3 will outsell battlefield 3 because of little kids age 10-15 will want to play an arcade game call of duty, battlefield 3 is a mans game BF3 for the win
3:12 am
MW3 will sell more copies in my opinion only because it is such a gaming juggernaut… however BF3 is the better game, let the kids enjoy their MW2.1 with fast-paced arcade game shooting, while the rest of us can enjoy BF3′s superior engine, maps, and teamplay… BF3 FTW
3:22 am
hahahaha @matt what are you talking about. bf2 and bf3 are very different but mw2 and mw3 are basically the same, they even use the same engine. Mw3 same game different name.
5:21 am
I know every one is trying to be very mature on this topic, but fuck Call of Duty. I will never give Activision another penny. You can’t rebox a old game, sell it, and do it again. Call of Duty is going to crash because of their own incompetence. Modern Warfare 3 may sell more, but it won’t (and never has been) be the better game. In 3 years from now Call of Duty will be a distant memory just like Guitar Hero and Tony Hawk.
6:18 am
MW3 blows! fucking add gun recoil and remove your ability to dead sprint in any direction without much accuracy penalty and oh god remove snap to targeting! Then i may think about playing that pussy shit.
6:27 am
tbh this bf2 with destruction would be bf3- thats bullshit- the problem with debating on this is that people are too biased- both games are good but honestly from a non-biased point of view bf3 wont outsell MW3 yet but it will do- but BF3 is the more innovative, engaging game- MW3 is fun but not challenging
12:49 pm
Well, I can honestly speak without too much of a biased opinion. Originally I was a BIG, HUGE COD fan. The only reason I found out about Battlefield Bad Company 2 was because Brink sucked hardcore, and I traded it in for BBC2… I switched over instantly. At the beginning though, I was really frustrated and was constantly putting COD back in so I could get my 30 and 5 kill/death ratio. COD and Battlefield are two different games and two different play styles. I learned that. And after it all, I can say COD doesn’t do it for me anymore. I enjoy tanks, the size of maps, and sniping all the more in BBC2 and not so much in COD. However, I think this whole “Battlefield sucks!” or “COD is for kids” argument is stupid and defeats any purpose of being fair to both different games. At this point, I can definitely say more kids my age(15) play COD then they do Battlefield. Anyways, just wanted to say I am going to be preordering Battlefield 3. If anyone plays it on the PS3 my PSN is: DeLUCKYdawg —more friends the better.
See you on the battlefield…. x:) that was lame, but whatever.
8:26 pm
I have been playing online shooters since Unreal Tournament for the sega dreamcast. BF3 is going to change everything similar to the way Halo did. All shooters will try to ghost BF3 for the next ten years.
3:00 am
Im just going to say what i been seeing
Both Games look fun.
It all goes down to the Basic Idea.. What do you prefer in a FPS? a War Simulator (Bf3)… or Caged Warfare (MW3)..
4:25 am
Sitting back and reading every single post on this subject has made me come to realize how childish each and everyone of you are in your own special way.. For the simple fact is they are 2 great games coming out and all you guys have to think is who is going to win between the two?
You will like what you will like.. If you are a fast pace run and gun kind of person, then yes Modern Warfare 3 is just for you.. If you want a strategical game, then BattleField 3 is for you.. All and All, We are all different.. And we all like different game Strategies..
8:07 pm
Thank you, you get what im all about.
Xbl gamertag: UND3ADPSYCHO
If my list is full msg me everyone.
5:06 am
I’m buying both. i dont know what you guys have against these games but theyre both awesome. but as a side note, BF3 is supposed to outlive MW3
6:46 am
Sadly I think the most mature statement I’ve heard came from a 15 y/o. Both games look awesome, and it truly comes down to your own personal gaming style. I will prolly be going with BF3. so I’ll see you on there DeLUCKYdawg.
6:54 am
its your own goddang opinion isnt it, bunch of losers
4:47 pm
I have played cod loads. I used to love it! Was my favorite game untill i played bfbc2! Maps are better. And playing a shooter without vehicals just seems odd to me now! At the end of the day im sure cod will win in sales as there are 12 year old boys all over the world who parents will buy it for them. But the way i see it cod is a war game and bf2 is a war simulator! The fact that the kids play cod is good as they wont be annoying me by playing music and being abnoxious on my head set while i play a good stratigic game of bf2! Having said all that i have the spelling age of 12!!! Lol

You are all noobs, and I bet most of you flaming on here are the same ones that talk so much shit and then rage quit like the pussies you are. Its not what gaming is about, its where the competition is. If there is competition, there is a game. You can find this in almost any fps. I like bf for my ridiculous kdr, and cod just for fast paced hand eye coordination pwnage. A real gamer will have both. As that is gaming, not all this fanboy lame ass kiddie shit.
5:00 am
I only really buy COD for it’s Singleplayer, but Battlefield has always been superior in terms of MP and teamwork. It just depends of your personal tastes and which type (SP or MP) you prefer. I find it strange how Battlefield fans are talking about how bad COD fanboys are, and yet talk exactly like them.
9:27 am
I would like to believe most people can only dedicate a few hours to their gaming because of work or a social life. Looks like there are fans of both games. We really don’t know who we play with or against online. For the average gamer BF3 will be too time consuming and frustrating to understand all the mechanics and controls for weapons and vehicles. Simple always wins and why fix what isn’t broken. MW3 will outsell it’s competition, at least this year. We’ll see about next year!
6:10 am
To be honest both games are really good, Most these comments are about the players not the actual game, so bacily stop taking the piss out of the games and face the fact that the players on the game are the assholes.
Plus, Both games are full of kids, really kids should’nt play these games, not because of age limits but because it ruins the experience for older and better experienced players.
8:59 pm
I play most of the CoD games and was pleased to see that some have the split screen for old farts like me who aren’t bothered about going on line”multiplayer”. Do we know if BF3 has split screen so that I can still kill my son on a regular basis? On the game obviously….
7:47 pm
For all Battlefield 3 fans, i have seen someone last night in my xbl party playing battlefield 3 campaign because there is a certain spot in New York where it can be obtained early. The ball is in your court.
