A court has lifted a gagging order preventing newspapers reporting on the private life of John Terry, the England football captain and Chelsea defender, opening the door to photos of him allegedly having an affair to be published.

After having found out that the News of the World paper had plans to publish a story and pictorial about him which rumours say may show him in a compromising position with someone who is not his wife, Terry approached his legal team and had the injunction put into place.

The judge now, however, has removed the injunction, and stated that the pictures were ‘widely in circulation’ among agents and other media employees. This opens the door for the newspaper to publish its story, potentially as early as Sunday.

The Judge, in his comments, also talked about the freedom to live in the way you want – but also that he wanted to protect the right of people to comment on that.

The newspaper said that the ruling ‘recognises the media’s right to report’ – and that the current legal system was ‘draconian’ and outdated. They pointed out that to gag a newspaper in the age of Twitter and social networking was ridiculous.

The newspaper also implied that a large number of Premier League football players and celebrities have similar gagging orders currently active on news stories about their lives.

It remains to be seen how John Terry reacts if and when the alleged photos of his affair turn up in the News of the World.
