iPhone 4G Problems

Update: One of the iPhone 4G problems that has been most reported has been holding the phone ‘incorrectly’. It seems Apple is aware of these iPhone 4G problems, as they have responded with: “Don’t hold it like that.”

Update: More and more people have been reporting iPhone 4G Problems with reception, and Apple have released a statement relating to the ‘proper use’ of the phone.

With development stretching back months and years, you would expect any iPhone 4G problems to have been ironed out months ago. Not so. Thousands of users of the new iPhone 4 have reported problems with a whole host of functions…let’s have a look at the major ones:

iPhone 4G Problems

Widely covered across the net, the reception of the iPhone 4 seems to drop out when holding the phone with the left hand. No problem, says Steve Jobs – “Stop holding it like that”. Thanks dude.

The next problem with Apple Inc.’s new iPhone 4G is that is still doesn’t allow us to use flash. So half of the video content out there on the web is unavailable to us. Steve Jobs has a negative opinion of Adobe, but should that limit every iPhone user in such a crippling, far-reaching way? Come on Steve, give the customer what they want. Flash!

Another problem with the new iPhone 4G, and this may have been totally unintended, is that it calls itself a fourth generation iPhone. Which it is, but the uninitiated consumer is likely to assume that the phone is capable of using 4th generation 4G wireless internet standards, when if fact its still plane-jane 3G. There may or may not be a deliberate misleading going on here. In either case it’s a good sales tactic for Apple.

Another problem is one that even Steve Jobs himself struggles with – wifi. Apple has never had outstanding wifi on its products, but we hoped the iPhone 4G problems wouldn’t include problems with wifi. But they do. Steve Jobs that the unveiling conference for the iPhone 4G couldn’t get the phone’s wifi to work, and commenting, “Well geez,” and to his tech support, “Got any suggestions?” We hope it was just a network problem.

If you have picked up the new phone, let us know of any iPhone 4G problems that you have encountered here in the comments – there may be some that we’ve missed!

  • I have had the iphone4 since it’s release. I have been fortunate enough to not have signal or screen issues. However, yesterday afternoon with approx 70% of battery remaining the phone just went off. I couldn’t turn it back on by any means. I had to wait until I got home to connect it to the wall mains charger. After two minutes the phone rebooted.

    Any

    • That happened to me for my iphone 3gs but I recently cracked the screen so I don’t know if it is related :s

    • Yep, mine did the same thing today…..I have had it only a week. Does anyone know the cause??

      • When you leave an app open for a while it uses most of your battery so close the app when you don’t need them

      • yeah it froze…you need to hold down the only two buttons on the phone until it shows the apple logo. it will reboot and everything will be fine

        • Peter Fairclough

Many thanks for this. I thoght my one-week old iP4 had just died while resting on a table, but I’ve now given it the kiss of life and it’s up and running…but for how long? It will be tedious if it’s a recurrent problem – any views?

      • Elaine Pagliuca

You probably are eating up your battery. Make sure you are closing all your windows on the bottom. I went to apple and they showed me why that happens. Since then, I have been good with the battery life.

    • Maybe the firmware? If you leave an app open it may have some bug that uses the battery too much and the phone discharged. Specially with wireless.

My new phone arrived last Wednesday and the phone speaker doesn’t work – the only way I can use the phone is on the loudspeaker! – anyone else had this problem?
      regards
      kt

        Keith,

I thought I had a similar issue – i.e. faulty speaker. However, i left the original screen protectors on which cover the speaker at the top of the phone. I cut a slit in this, job done, sound can now travel to my ear. I’m waiting on proper case coming hence leaving original protectors on in the meantime.

      • Hi I had this problem with my old 3G I had to use the headset to take calls and listen to music it turned out to be a faulty headphone jack! The phone thought headphones were pluged in all the time.

      • I literally just got my phone home from the store, and I have the exact same problem!

      • YES! I just sent my new iphone4 back to be replaced because I could ONLY use my phone on loud speaker!

      • I have, its like i cant hear out of the phone unless its hooked up to a headset, im not having any other problem with it but this.

    • the go to guy

take it back and get a new one its sounds like you have a problume with the battery and the connection with the i phone it will ramdomly do this im a computer tech and i see that same thing with laptops every day and 9 times outta 10 its the same thing its the battery or the phone is not correctly conecting to the battery

    • Ive had my phone since launch also and it crashed on me about 10 times like that, very annoying. I just have to plug it in somewhere then it will reboot. i hope there is an update soon for problem.

    • I have a problem with texting. When I type a message I cannot send it. The send button is in greyscale. The problem occurred after I turned off the auto correct. Apple called me about the problem and told me to reset the phone. Resetting is a pain. The problem started on 7/23 and reoccurred on 7/25. Apple will call me tomorrow morning.

      • Marge Dunning

My boss is having the same problem when trying to send a text. The option to send appears to be greyed out. Did you find a fix?

    • i am deaf in my right ear Apple so fix the problem

    • I waited a month for the new iphone4 to arrive. It worked for 2 days on the initial charge, then completely died. It would not charge at all. Apple store tested the phone and discovered that it was putting out too much amperage-thus shutting it’s self off. A swap out was done without problem. Upon arriving home with the new phone, I synced the new phone to itunes. Worked great last night and this morning I am once again without a phone. Same problem- phone just shut down.Completely dead! Come on Apple!!! I am a die hard Apple fan/owner Mac Book Pro, ipod classic, iphone 3g and iphone4. This is not the quality we have come to expect Apple.

  • The iphone4 has a design flaw without a doubt

There is no question about it the antenna
in the left hand corner of the phone when
    covered looses all signal strength.

I’m right handed and cradle the phone in
my left hand covering the antenna and
sure enough I loose signal strength

I just can’t believe any company let alone
Apple putting out a flawed device

Did anyone make call or text as
I do before they released the phone?

Now these so called know it all’s
Tell us we are holding the phone
    incorrectly

    What a bunch of nonsense
    admit your mustKe and make
    The necessary corrections
    whatever it takes.

    • I totally agree.

I watched and read Mr Jobs news conference about the Iphone4 fault. All I saw was man who is arrogant and not caring about their consumers (apart from giving away a mobile case cover).

I was going to upgrade to Iphone4 but now I don’t feel confident in their product.

      • I agree with you,

I am a blackberry fan I recently bought an iphone 3gs on ebay brand new, i was quite impressed with it until i downloaded the ios4 software, which renderd my phone useless in recovery mode. Apple replaced the phone with a new 3gs which has been working well but I am always concerned about having to update the software now.

The 3gs I feel is still the best iphone the iphone 4 should have had far better features then what it has been created with, a 5mpx camera and video calling is years behind, both sony erikson and nokia already had handsets capable of this in the early naughties. HD is not a selling point to me on a phone as the 3gs is perfectly adequate. However I am pleased the 4g has a flash as that is useful, but I feel apple need to rethink there ideas as other smartfones are proving to have a better track record dispite not being as ‘popular’ the iphone brand, I think I will keep my 3gs and await the upgraded version of the 4g when apple release it.

  • i have experienced the signal problem but thats just the start of it… i have had it since the day of release and have had several other wierd things happen…

Firstly, i answered a call and the ringtone continued to play so i had to hang-up and then call the person back…

Also, during a call, the loud-speaker cuts in on its own for about 3 seconds then turns itself off!(very confusing when)…

I’ve also had the pone crash a couple fo times after ending a call… all i am left with is the ‘End Call’ screen – i have to swithc the phone off then back on before i can re-use it.

Apple should have called this the ‘iPhone Pandora’ as its a wonderful phone but with some awful bugs!

Cant wait for the imminent firmware upgrade!

  • My husband’s phone stopped responding to the charger/connector at about 40% battery life, when the battery died we took it to an Apple store where they could not turn it back on or get it to recognize a power source in any way. We were unable to retrieve the just taken pictures and movies of our 2 year old son’s first time to the beach and disneyland. All they did was give him a new phone, no explanation.

  • My iphone 4 has been beset with problems since the day I got it – it just turns itself off for no reason. It happens at least once a day, sometimes twice. To restart the phone requires holding down the on/off button and main button for about 15 seconds although it takes several attempts to restart. I have told Apple about this problem and am currently waiting for a replacement which can’t arrive soon enough and will hopefully not have the same problem. I am told that this problem has not been widely reported, has anyone else been affected?

    • YESSSSS, probably 10 times since i had it, since launch.

    • Charles Crawford

I have had the same problem. My iphone4 will shut down for no reason and will repeat this shutdown 6 to 8 times in a 2 hour period. It has also shut down while on a call and another call comes in.
My phone will work perfectly when I have the battery charger pluged in and have the phone sitting on my counter top and using the speaker. This no touch feature is alot of trouble but works.

  • Flash is a horrible omission (still) but I don’t think it’s fair to accuse Steve Jobs of having a negative opinion about Adobe or to suggest that this suggested opinion is then the sole reason to not put flash into the phone or pad. The reason is much more likely to have to do with the fact that flash support will compete with App store sales since allowing flash will also allow flash games and apps within websites (potentially paid for websites outside of Apple’s sphere of influence).

I’d pull the trigger on the iPhone 4 myself right now but the thing that grinds my gears is the new data caps instead of unlimited data on the contracts, and the fact I’m gonna have to buy out of my contract instead of renegotiate a new one as I had done with all my other iphones!! Gonna run me £260 to upgrade.

  • i have the iphone 4 and have had a few problems that are mentioned above but that all software an update will fix all that. as for the signal loss issue im right handed and use my right hand to answer calls so not touching the black line, but when i did test it the signal dropped like 2 bars thats it so not a major issue for me.
i have watched a video of a demo of a nokia wich uses a metal part as the antenna like the iphone and it has the exact same problem when you wrap your hands round it so its not just apple. but anyway for me and im sure many others not an issue. for people reading these things just remember you mainly only hear about the bad and faulty things with any electrical item you research

  • Had the phone since the day it came out! Have had no problems. I tried covering the left bottom corner but no signal is lost!! I am not sure what everyone is talking about?

    • i havent had a single problem with mine… i tried covering the phone in all sorts of ways to make the signal not work and it works wonderful… in fact i covered it during a whole call and the call sounded clearer :)

  • michelle taylor

I have intermittent text issues,i can recieve them ok,but can’t reply or send new ones, getting frustrating….also exactly a week after getting my phone it cut out for no reason,i went back to the shop and they rebooted it for me…told me to hold down both the on/off button and the one down the bottom who’s technical name escapes me at the same time….anyone else issues with texts ??

  • Not sure what to think of iPhone 4… There are definitely great improvements from the 3GS, unfortunately, the reception problems and wifi connectivity issues are driving me nuts.
I am truly considering going back to the 3GS with OS4 installed.

  • I’m on Phone Number 2 First on was okay But Did start to have Signal Problems
No 2 yes Signal drops a bit Plus I live in a bad area for any phone Network

New problem compass always asks for calibration and other apps do like my Navigation do

Next new problem never had with the 3G or 3G (s) is when in call the light sensor allows the screen to light up causing the Mute Button to active Happen at least 10 times last night on 2 different call occasions very very Annoying sort it out Apple hope you didn’t move the sensor lol

    • I have had the same problems with the mute and speaker buttons while on calls. Very very annoying indeed. I was on a work conference call yesterday, and the phone kept muting and unmuting itself..and the speaker button would also go and off.. I never had these problems on the 3G.
Apple obviously didnt perform thorough testing of this product.
The iphone4 is solid for everything except making phone calls.

I picked up my new iPhone a week ago and have dropped calls ever since. The reception is terrible. I called ATT and they said that the good news is that new towers will be put up in my area soon. That is not the answer, my 3G iPhone worked GREAT. I went to ATT store and they gave me a new SIM card. Thought that would help with the reception but it didn’t. I’m not even holding the phone when the bars go down or the phone goes into “searching” mode for a signal. Will probably turn in unless Apple admits to problem and gives me a resolution.

    • To you and anyone interested remember that Apple has a 30 day return policy if you are not satisfied with your phone.

    • I am on day 27 with the iPhone 4 having picked it up on release day and am sorely disappointed in its performance. It drops calls more frequently than my old Verizon Treo, which I didn’t think was possible. Even while standing still, bars will suddenly fall from 3 or 4 to 0, cutting off the call. Call backs often don’t work. I have also experienced several of the aberrations described here. I thought perhaps I was causing some of them, being unfamiliar with iPhone operation, but you can’t all be wrong. I am turning in the iPhone4 to return to Verizon to try a Droid. Shame on Apple!

    • Yes I have also had many many dropped calls.
Nearly everyone I am speaking with (once we are reconnected), say that I must have the new i4phone.
Sad that so many people automatically assume that.
I loved my 3G. So far this new one has been okay except for all those dropped calls.
Does anyone else notice how freaking BRIGHT the flash is on the camera??? I take a lot of pet photos and their eyes look like headlights with the way they glare back at you. Much too bright to Photoshop out. Crazy.

  • I just used my iphone 4g for the first time and somehow lines from someone having a conversation came onto my phone. That was very strange! Hope it doesn’t happen again or I will be sending this phone back to Apple!

  • I’ve had my iPhone from the day after it was released and had no problems at all.. i can see that the signal drops when I touch the line but not one of my calls has dropped yet.
I think its an amazing device!

  • im not telling

yes the best way to not get a call dropped is to use the headphones, when you use them the call wont be dropped. one time i had 8 dropped calls in 15 minutes. its no joke…. if your thinking about getting on dont, wait until they fix whatever is wrong with them, because it will only frustrate you if you talk on the phone alot like me

    • I wouldn’t hold your breathe. Somehow I don’t think apple will be fixing the connection issuse any time soon, after watching Steve Job’s PR conference the other day.

  • I tried covering my iPhone 3G and 3GS the signal went down 3 or 4 bars on both.

    • That’s probably because it happens to every phone. Everyone is just little babies when something doesn’t work for them and they love to point fingers. If you know that holding it a certain way is going to cause signal loss, than why the hell don’t you just hold it a different way? is it really gonna kill you?

      • its just really annoying…
i hand my phone to a friend and I have to warn them accordingly or their call will be dropped

        it sucks

  • WOW! was so excited when i got to know the iphone 4 was due for release but after reading these posts i’m seriously reconsidering switching to apple.

  • I am hoping to get the iPhone soon and like many, i think the iphone 4 has some great advantages, but i’ve been hearing mixed messages about the problems. Some have them, some don’t, but I’m finding it hard to believe that Apple of all companies would just dismiss a problem like this. I think this is a result of rushed designing/manufacturing, I believe that they were worries if they took too long after announcing the iphone four’s arrival that people would lose interest. The earliest i could hope to get one would be January so hopefully the problems will be fixed, but like i said I’ve heard mixed messages and I’m not sure what to believe. Even though I’m left handed I hold the iPhone in my left hand (or occasionally both hands) and use my right hand/ thumbs to do what i need to. I’m worried about getting one for fear I’ll have all these problems I hear about and no way to fix them for myself. Can anyone help me out?

Phew, sorry for writing a novel.

  • I still have the iphone 3g 8g, and have just updated it through itunes for the new software where you can make your own files ect. Ever since i have had problems with apps and the phone cutting out. I was looking forward to upgrade to the iphone 4, but as this software is on the new iphone i think i will leave well alone. My son has the sony experia x10, i think i’ll join him!

  • I Have The New iPhone 4 And i Downloaded The New Update 4.1 To My iTunes And Started Installin It And It Was Stil Doin It About 2 And A Half Hours Later So I Pulled The Connection Out And Now My Now Wont Do Anything Wont Even Turn On Or Off ???

    • I downloaded the new software onto my Iphone 4 after 3 attempts. The download took 3 hours I’m praying that I don’t have any problems- If I’d read these forums beforehand I certainly wouldn’t have bought one.

      • I know I hate the update. It took me forever and in the end had to go to the apple store to get my phone restored and updated.

  • one thing i notice about the 4g its a great phone but people shouldnt get upset that the phone has problems because… one the phone just came out of course there going to have problems the same way when the ps3 came out and the xbox 360 they all had some type of problem but because of updates they fix the problems …if ur worryed about ur battary they have many great apps for it …. the service on the 4g i most say is so amazing that while i was on 34th street in trainstation waiting downstairs waiting for the train i had full service i was shock …i think the only people that have had problems with there phone was the one that rush to get it the min it came out …so if u keep updateing ur phone it will make it all better

    • I also agree that it is a brand new phone and it could have problems. I think that Apple rushed through the process also. They should have compared it to the iPhone 3G, 3G(s), and 2G and done the same tests and more. I do think Apple will have to fix those problems no matter what because they will lose sales and if they do not fix it soon people will not buy the next phone produced by Apple. I think in their fixed phone they will put the antenna up like most phones so that the connections are not lost. I also think they will put a better touchscreen so it does not mute itself and then unmute for no reason. I ordered the phone but it was not in stock so they will send me an e-mail to come pick it up but I will cancel my order until they fix ALL the problems and Steve Jobs realizes that his phone will not succeed and will not sell well. On their next phone they should have learned their lesson and do better and stronger tests. my old iPhone also looses connection a lot though I do not know why. Steve Jobs better do something, and I think he will.

  • I’ve had the phone for about a week now, and that happened to me three days after having it.

  • I agree with Steven, its a brand new phone, it’s bound to have problems. Despite apple’s nonchalant response to all these problems I can bet that they are trying to fix it. This is a good example of why you don’t buy something right as it comes out. everything new must have some problem or another, and it takes time to fix them. Be patient, they’ll fix it I’m sure.

    • Ya, a new phone will have problems but not these kind of problems and not so many of them. In short, sloppy product development and shoddy engineering.

  • So if this is all the problem for the Iphone 4g, then is it better to get the iphone 3gs for new consumers who wants to buy one?

  • Has anyone tried to save phone numbers from text messageson iOS4.0.1? I tried to save a telephone number to an existing contact and it takes me to the new contact screen….

  • when mine came it had a big crack, going from the top to the bottom.

  • by the way, i’m left handed hahaha

  • Ellen Rothmann

I have been in need of a new phone for a while, still using a 2 year old Samsung. I just purchased the iphone 4G (still in it’s packaging) and with all the problems being reported, I am having second thoughts. Knowing what all you users now know, should i return it, wait for an updated model to come out or choose a new phone altogether? Please advise!

  • same death, same…

  • I have a blackberry curve… due for an upgrade… Do i stick with my faithfull blackberry or risk the iphone4? did think about HTC handsets but i know someone who is ace at technology… he recommended the iPhone 4 despite its faults and issues… What do you people think? Would you all still go for it despite having the issues you have now?

    Cheers

    • I’d stick with it till they fix the problems. You’ll get another upgrade at some point right? Well by then I bet they’ll fix it. Stay with the Blackberry till there’s a better option.

  • It’s amazing how badly iPhone 4 sucks. It’s also amazing how Apple Fanboys will defend it until the end of time. I will freely note first off that I am not a fanboy by any stretch, however I do have the 3GS, which I love. I did buy the iPhone 4, and it was so terrible that I returned it and went back to my current 3GS. It was just that bad. It’s hilarious to me what Apple fanboys are saying in forums and blogs all across the web, defending this thing like it’s some sacred gem, pretending all its issues don’t even exist. Ridiculous.

    • Totally agree… A friend pickedup the 4G and shes had nothing but issues with it. Apple’s problem is simple, they are now fatcats and don’t need to hustle to be “on top”. And Steve Jobs response on holding the iphone– “Stop holding it like that”. You sir should get bitch slapped for actually saying that.

    • Frank Burden (UK)

I agree with you here…..I also use the 3GS….and find it invaluable and very reliable….except now with the upgraded operating system…see my comments further down…..I am an iPhone addict, but Im slowly swinging towards the new NOKIA N8 smart phone…..check it out….seems to beat APPLE’s 4G….so come on APPLE…own up and fix hthese problems!

  • I tried to sync my iphone4 the other day but iTunes says it can’t find the content. My photos upload to iphoto fine though. Has anyone else had this problem? I guess I’m going to have to reset it to factory settings (which I don’t really want to do re all hassles of getting back applications etc). I’ve spoken to apple but they say there’s nothing else I can do. If anyone has any ideas I’d appreciate it. Thx

  • Had my iphone 4 for a week now. Had iphone 3g before and it is the best thing i ever bought and i became a huge fan so was really looking forward to the 4g.
It’s got plenty of bells and whistles but keep losing connection midway through calls. It is no good as a phone.

  • so i live in good ol canada and of course the iphone 4 hasnt come out here yet, but like everyone else im pschyed about it and really want one. i read news about it and the problems and now reading everyone’s problem here im starting to second guess it to. im wondering if i should wait it out until it comes and see if some of these problems have been fixed or just wait it out altogether till its fixed for sure??? it comes out july 30 here!

    Please let me know

    • whatever you do wait till they fix it. Both my parents were engineers both say NEVER get something that JUST came out because it will almost always have bugs. play it safe and wait till it’s fixed and you won’t regret it.

  • I’m new to iPhone; the iPhone 4 is my first smart phone, so I’m a touch screen newbie. I have problems with hitting the END button while talking on the phone. I guess I’m doing it with my face. Is there a way to “lock” the screen to keep that from happening?

    • thats a common problem people are having.

it’s supposed to use a proximity sensor to tell that your face is next to the phone…but it’s messed up, hence your screen stays on while you are in a call.

      No good.

  • Could it be the new os? Since I’ve updated my iPhone 3G with the new os I’ve had nothing but problems. Especially answering calls. It wills just shut off and give me the apple on screen. Apple has turned into microsoft with it’s iPhone. Release a piece of junk before it’s ready for the market.

  • kristen deg

my birthday is in 17 days i want to get a iphone for my birthday but after hearing about all the problems idk. i just want to know how many people think its worth it and how many dont

  • So u all think should buy iphone 3Gs or 4G????

    • Buy the 3g.
Download the ip4 software and use it on your 3g..
It gives u all the new features but of course your not going to have the 2nd camera or the looks as the ip4.
The software takes like 4 hours to download..

  • I currently have the iPhone 3GS and the new 4.1 OS for the phone. I have noticed a lot of dropped calls with the phone lately. And also some apps freezing when I leave them in the MultiTasking toolbar. I don’t know if anyone has had any of those problems with their phone?

  • when im on a call the screen will light up and start pressing random things. Any one have this problem?

  • Has anyone else got the nice vertical red line down the left side of the 4G screen? The 4G support website stinks.

  • This phone is a piece of crap. I have had more calls dropped than any phone I have ever owned. I now have an appointment tomorrow to have smoke blown up my ass. Don’t buy one….WMN

  • Got the new 4G today and am having problems with the camera, I hear that many others are also. Is there a way to correct this or do we send it back and get another one?

  • There are a lot of problems; iPhone 4 has never been tested fully before releasing.
It dials itself randomly sometimes. It does dropping calls, losing signal strength if held by left hand.
It has texting issue, Wi-Fi and blue tooth cannot connect sometimes, battery dies and gets discharged if apps are left open, there is no power save option or auto power save to close open or unused or unwanted open apps automatically not very smart and it is not 4G, it is iPhone 4 without G.
To fix all these hardware and software issues, apple will have to release a new iPhone 4G or 4Gs sometimes in June 2011, same design and spec. The new iPhone will not losing signal.
For those who are confused and not sure what to do now, wait for iPhone 4Gs or there are few other good brands with years of experience in making mobile phones to get your hands on, they creating very efficient products.

  • Purchased the iPhone4 2 days ago and still unable to connect to the internet after upgrading to the 4.0.1 upgrade. NOT IMPRESSED SO FAR APPLE! Get it sorted. After 3 calls to Orange technical support, a futher restore in order to reset the network settings, no joy. I am not happy and will be returning this expensive piece of junk to the retailer I purchased it from!

  • I’ve purchased my Iphone4. So far I’ve not experienced any drop off calls (fingers crossed). But I’ve noticed the bars are reduced.

The only major problem for me (at the moment) is the ipod player. There is no stop button to stop the music from playing. Its the first I’ve come across on a player, as most have a stop button. I’m finding this very annoying. I’m sure this will have an impact the battery.

I’m surprised no one has mentioned it as another design flaw.

  • Frank Burden (UK)

its not the Iphone 4, I held back. But 4.0 software. After updatineg 3GS, I synced again later. Itunes had difficulty recognising my phone and error code – surfing gave me the fix. Remove all musiv/movies then re install. This I carried out,but then half of my music albums did not sync back. I repeated the proceedure. half the albums remained missing. Some were still in my desktop itunes folder and some were clearly in my opened itunes….but I was unable to transfer back to the iphone. Some of this music was itunes purchase…now lost. I now see the new NOKIA 8N as a serious contender – yet Ive had the iphone since Nov 2007.

  • i have the first iphone and i never have problems with it…..sometimes the original is best lol

  • I got my new i phone and i could not hear the person i was phoning through the speaker! They were very very faint!
