iPhone 4G Problems

Update: One of the iPhone 4G problems that has been most reported has been holding the phone ‘incorrectly’. It seems Apple is aware of these iPhone 4G problems, as they have responded with: “Don’t hold it like that.”

Update: More and more people have been reporting iPhone 4G Problems with reception, and Apple have released a statement relating to the ‘proper use’ of the phone.

With development stretching back months and years, you would expect any iPhone 4G problems to have been ironed out months ago. Not so. Thousands of users of the new iPhone 4 have reported problems with a whole host of functions…let’s have a look at the major ones:

iPhone 4G Problems

Widely covered across the net, the reception of the iPhone 4 seems to drop out when holding the phone with the left hand. No problem, says Steve Jobs – “Stop holding it like that”. Thanks dude.

The next problem with Apple Inc.’s new iPhone 4G is that is still doesn’t allow us to use flash. So half of the video content out there on the web is unavailable to us. Steve Jobs has a negative opinion of Adobe, but should that limit every iPhone user in such a crippling, far-reaching way? Come on Steve, give the customer what they want. Flash!

Another problem with the new iPhone 4G, and this may have been totally unintended, is that it calls itself a fourth generation iPhone. Which it is, but the uninitiated consumer is likely to assume that the phone is capable of using 4th generation 4G wireless internet standards, when if fact its still plane-jane 3G. There may or may not be a deliberate misleading going on here. In either case it’s a good sales tactic for Apple.

Another problem is one that even Steve Jobs himself struggles with – wifi. Apple has never had outstanding wifi on its products, but we hoped the iPhone 4G problems wouldn’t include problems with wifi. But they do. Steve Jobs that the unveiling conference for the iPhone 4G couldn’t get the phone’s wifi to work, and commenting, “Well geez,” and to his tech support, “Got any suggestions?” We hope it was just a network problem.

If you have picked up the new phone, let us know of any iPhone 4G problems that you have encountered here in the comments – there may be some that we’ve missed!

The phone purchased few days back is not functioning properly, the battery runs down very fast. After 100% charge – 40minutes talk it comes down to 55%. And now the retailer and Bell customer service are passing around the buck. Is it my fault that the product sold by a renowned company like Bell/iPhone is faulty, why should i suffer if i trusted in the company’s name ? Why am i supposed to spend my time and money to get a loaner phone and then go leave the phone to a store for repair which says that the phone would come back from 4 to 6 weeks? Though there is no gaurantee that it would be fine there after. Why is it that my model cannot be replaced with a new one ??
    Agonised Customer…….

  • THREE NETWORK + iPhone 4 SPELLS DISASTER!!

I’ve been eagerly waiting for the iPhone 4 to be released, and decided to go with three as they had the cheapest option with most minutes. I originally had been with three, about 7 years ago, and remember having signal problem, but since then they have advertised heavily with improved network.

Soon as i got it, that’s when problems started.

DAY 1…. I had fluctuated signal issues, where the signal bar would go up and down without touching the phone, Three advised to get a case it was a known issue, how will that solve the issue I’M NOT TOUCHING THE PHONE!! anyway got one, did not resolve, called them back and offered md half price 1 month line rental, whilst the work was being carried out in one particular area i was having issues with.
They offered me a call back this did not materialize!

DAY 2…. Issues getting 3G signal, particularly indoors, tested at four main areas i travel too between 10 and 100 mile apart. Took handset back to the store they are not interested as i had used the handset, and accepted a discount from three!! HOW THE HELL DO YOU TEST A PRODUCT FOR DEFECTS WITHOUT USING IT!!!

DAY 3…. Rung Back three and agreed to have the handset replaced, agreed to it, but decided to test the SIM in my iPhone 3GS handset, same fluctuating problem, this handset had been on the o2 Network for the last 12 months never such problem, was advised this was a known issue on all iPhone handset… OKAY!!! WHATEVER!!

Rung back, told me to put it in another manufactures handset to which i did, told me to go through network settings to see what signal it captures, WE both agreed IT WAS NOT CAPTURING 3G SIGNAL where i was located Offered 1 MONTH free line rental, i refused this I DID NOT WANT OFFERS and MONEY BACK, I just want i service i was paying good money for.

DAY 4…. I noticed the proxy sensor wasn’t working properly, as few times i had hit the mute button with my ear, they agreed to get the Handset replaced, ONLY AFTER COMPLETELY LOSING IT WITH THEM!
The offered me a second call back

DAY 5…. I got a TEMPERATURE ERROR message on phone, message read the phone needs to cool down before i use it again, hard reset did not fix this message, but did clear after 10 minutes… ignored this error as i was going get handset replaced, but still needed to use handset, for a few days. I mentioned of the call back they meant to do, apparently they called yesterday, but could not connect to my phone, DUH… that would be because no signal!

DAY 6, Cold morning, browsed internet for 5 minutes … TEMPERATURE ERROR!! could not use it for 30 minutes, the phone was not even HOT!!
Called back three, BY NOW I WAS TOTALLY ANGRY WITH THREE, and really KICKED off at them, call disconnected, due to TEMPERATURE ERROR, few seconds cleared and called back again DISCONNECT due to TEMPERATURE ERROR… AAAHHHHHHHH!!!

IMMEDIATELY went back to store and demonstrated the error during a call.
HANDSET RETURNED and Refunded and Contact CANCELLED!!!

This was the worst experienced i have ever had with issues both with the network as well as the handset, this had caused me alot of grief in the last 6 days, all i was doing was repeating myself and nobody wanted to accept responsibility and accept that there was a problem, i had to do the constant chasing, as well as the travelling. i Had spent… must be at least 4 hours calling three with all my problems!

GEE am i glad to get out of the contact, there’s reason why their Tariffs so GOOD, it cos their networks so SHIT!
The store kept pointing at their 14 days policy at the point of sale, that they will accept return if i was not happy with it, but when it came to the crunch, bollocks!
I had been on o2 Network and always used the phone for everything and my bill was always £32.50 after discount never went up or down, but with three i had already spent £1.01 outside my allowance in the first few days, when i asked of this, it was due to picture message, isn’t that part of the bundle! oh it’s NOT, PICTURE EMAIL is!!! what the hell is picture mail, isnt that when you send a picture using email which is part of your data bundle?? very puzzling and not straight forward.

    Good Riddence!

I purchased the iPhone 4G approximately 2 weeks ago, & I already have a few concerns myself. Some concerns you have covered in your article, such as the reception issues, but in addition there is the issue of the vibration feature. Even without a case on the phone ( which you can’t get anywhere yet) I can’t feel the phone vibrating when it’s in my pocket. You can barely hear the phone vibrating on the table. I miss calls all the time if the ringer is not on, & from the people I have spoke with I’m not the only one.
    Thanks,
    Bryan K.

    • Nick Lawrence

This is common with all new iPhones since the 3G, they seem to vibrate very weakly for about a week. It gets better after that.

  • Does anyone know to stop/prevent people from using 3g network access on iphone4

The iPhone is or will be sold with limited data plans. Of course wi-fi will cost nothing if you can find an access point. But let’s say that you want to lock out 3G network net access (which will cost you money if you go over your monthly limit) for whatever reason. Is that possible?

    • I found it but I can’t remember how I did it. So there is a way. Since you posted this have you gotten your answer? If not, I will play with mine and see if I can find it and get back to you.

    • i just found it in the last couple minutes since my previous posting. Go under settings…tap on general….then go to network….then Enable 3G and tap it off….

  • Mike Bellissimo

So far I have had two phones experiencing the following problems-

    1. Dropped calls
    2. Text messages not mapping to contacts
    3. iPhoto sync buggy
    4. Calendar locks when accepting meeting invites
    5. Accelerometer buggy
    6. Battery
    7. “Me” spellchecks as me’
    8. Locks up when trying to switch from 3G to wireless

I have waited about 8 weeks for my iphone 4g. When i returned from my vacation i took one extra day so i could pick up my phone from the Phonehouse.
When i got home, and put the iPhone on. It kept vibrating.
This only happens when i have it on ”Loud”

Sometimes i cant hear the phone ringing.

I don’t know if its only an update problem?

  • I have had the iPhone 4 for about two weeks now. I have run across the following issues:

    - Signal strength has never been full
    - Have had dropped calls.
    - When on silent, it occasionally does not give me indication of a call or text. Not a weak vibe, but no vibe at all. I end up picking the phone up, which is sitting right next to me on my desk at work…and finding that I have missed a call or text.
    - The Bluetooth is flaky. I have the hands-free Bluetooth in my Acura TL, and half the time, I have to go into settings and activate the Bluetooth. Sometimes, when it is paired…it looses the signal, and I have to again…go into settings. When it is on, it is a poor signal. This is very frustrating as it is how I communicate on the cell while driving.
    - When I am on the phone, at the office or at home, I have to be careful to not touch the screen to my face because it will activate “Mute” or “Speaker” or anything else that comes up on the screen because my face touched it.
    - I cannot get FaceTime to work when connecting with another individual who has the iPhone4. So I STILL don’t know what it is like to use this “modern technology”…and that is quite frustrating.

So far…in two weeks…that is what I have run across. I am thinking about going back to my 3GS…I did not have all these problems with it.

    • Hello Russ;

I agree, I have all the problems you mentioned plus when my phone rings and I pick it up, not touch the screen just seeing who is calling, it will connect!

My 3GS was a much better phone. I’ll be getting a Droid as soon as Apple fixes my contact list.

      Good luck.

    • Just go to an Apple shop and get it replaced.I have done that once.
      cheers

  • New iPhone 4 user with the following problems:
    (1) dropped calls
    (2) chin pushes mute button, speaker phone, numbers when talking
    (3) poor battery life
    (4) friends hear hissing sound in background when talking to me
    (5) voice recognition not too accurate

  • I’ve had my iphone 4 for less than a week and all sounds (ringtone, ipod, alerts, app’s) have completely stopped working and speaker phone function doesn’t work. I havent’t had many other problems except occasional dropped calls. I rarely talk on the phone though. I mostly text.

    • Thats happening to me as well, i have to use earbuds, havent had this thing a month yet and i already have to return it, great phone otherwise

  • George Voneiff

Picked up new iphone4 today. Touch screen has many dead spots, will return phone tomorrow.

  • I’ve had my iphone 4 since 7-17. My biggest complaint is that when I synced with Mobile me it corrupted my contact list. I have as many as 20 listings for one name, but it gets better! Each listing has different numbers! Some just mix names, some mix names and numbers! I have been to the Apple store twice, they replaced my phone today and when we were done, it was WORSE!! More scrambled contacts. I’ve called apple support, they ask me if I had a back up,I say yes, Mobile me, great they say, no I say because Mobile me is corrupted also! Do you have another back up they ask me? How many should I have? I thought that’s what Mobile me was for. I spent three hours on the phone today, 2 hours on Mobile me chat (I would never have purchased Mobile me had I know that they didn’t have phone support). Still not fixed, I did talk to two people at Apple who think they can help me, they asked for a couple of days.
I can’t believe the quality of support offered by Apple, some of the people I talked to on the phone were just, not smart(being polite),the manager at the Apple store tried a few things today, I asked him if he knew what he was doing and he replied that this is all he can think of, he gave me a new phone and was polite, but in the end, my contact list is a joke.

I have learned that this is not that uncommon of a problem and is exclusive to the iphone 4!

I have over 500 contacts on my phone, both personal and business. This is such a headache and no light at the end of tunnel!

Has anyone else had this happen?

    Thank you.

  • Well, I had to drive 150 miles to get my phone from an Apple store since AT&T didnt have any ans werent getting any phones, I got it in another state that charges tax on the value of the purchase not the price so i had to pay tax on 600.00 instead of 199.99 and now that I have it there are issues, the biggest one I have found is that when I make a call I cant get the phone to hang up when I am leaving a message!!! It will stay on until the other line disconnects. Now that is an issue since first of all when you leave a message for someone they get all the after call chatter and it eats up the minutes of your call plan. So much work for something that I am going to have to do so much more work to be happy with it and of course we dont get paid for all that work!!!

  • Elaine Pagliuca

I hate this new 4g phone. Because you have to make sure you hold the phone a certain way as to not get disconnected, I find it to be very uncomfortable. I cannot trust the phone if I have an important call to make. I use the landline. If your chin or face touches the screen, the mute button or hold button goes on. My mom already told me not to call her from this phone because we get either disconnected or put on hold/mute.
Apple should be ashamed of themselves. I am ready to take a loss and get another phone. Never have I been so disappointed with Apple.

    • Your iPhones sensor is not working.Thats the reason why your display doesnt go off when you make a call and gets pressed all the time.I would suggest to exchange it for a new one with a working sensor..Test before you leave the apple shop.

      cheers

    • I agree! I almost exclusively use a land line now that I have this piece of junk. EVERY time I try to use the phone, the device ends the call, goes on hold, mute, opens contacts and will call one, the list goes on. I’ve been a loyal apple user for more than a decade, but this makes me question my cell phone choice judgment.

My 3G never had problems until it finally needed replacing (it was old, and the touch screen died). DO NOT BUY THIS PHONE! I am wondering if I can extract my information from it, return it and start over with a non-apple product.

I had my iPhone 4 for about 11 days and the screen began to flicker in the top right every so often. An hour later I’m on the internet via wifi and its died…literally. I tried restoring it; nothing, DFU mode; again nothing. Tried this about 15 times before calling Apple. Spoke with a tech very quickly he asked what the problem was an I read off the list of error messages I had received. He sighed, which is never a good sign. He then told me “I have some good news and some bad news, followed by MORE good news, and sadly more bad news. The Good News is you did all the trouble shooting for me. The bad news is your phone has a faulty processor. The other good news is we will replace it for you..the other bad news is…you will be without a phone for a few days”. This was only due to the fact that the closest Apple Store is 2 hours away and all local AT&T stores have no iPhone 4s. I didnt seem to have all the problems listed above, everything was great until the phone died. My reception wasnt even that bad…probably has to do with the cell phone tower being about a mile away LOL. SO, I did what any person would do, try and re-activate my old 3G so I would atleast have a phone…NOPE for two reasons. 1)iPhone 4′s Micro-Sim and 2) AT&T de-activated my old sim as soon as I activated the new phone, and apparently I cannot re-activate the sim…instead I’d have to go to an AT&T store and purchase a new sim card….according to the lady I got when calling AT&T Support.

  • Hi

I am wondering what’s best to get, a 3G or the new iphone4…is the new iphone 4 so bad?? Is it worth it over the 3G?

    • I loved my 3GS iphone, I hate the iphone 4 and will be replacing it as soon as Apple fix’s my contact list(see earlier posting).

    • For now I would say to stay away from both. Wait and see if Apple will finally take responsibility for their mistakes. I bought the 4g and went back to the 3GS and now have issues with it like the 4g just not all of them. I have been going back and forth between them and am not happy at all. I am probably going back to the blackberry as I rely on them for work and apple has turned to being a very shitty product.

  • Just purchased a new Iphone 4 and the camera shutter is stuck Tried turning on and off several times but still the same.
Can anyone advise how to fix….

    bob

  • Great news;

Mobile me was able to go back and retrieve my correct contact list! Thank God! My only question is: why did it take 6 weeks to correct this. I spoke with over 20 people before this was resolved. I am very thankful to have my contact list corrected, but the aggravation and stress was unbelievable! Apple really needs to work on customer support.

  • Looking all these comments on problem for iPhone 4G. Should i buy or opt for another one? please advise.

  • Not experiencing the problems others mention. It is an amazing machine!

  • I am also like to buy iphone4.
Really tell true anybody, This phone can buy or not

  • i just buy my new iphone 4g 1 week ago, and now i cannot open it,, no power at all.. i didnt drop it or anything else.. pls advise

  • I just purchased my phone from an Apple store last week. After three days phone stopped syncing with mobile me and had to be fully restored to get it to sync again. The next day it started the same screen problem others have posted above where calls are ended or put on hold, and even additional numbers were dialed in the middle of calls. It happened four times this morning on one 15 minute phone call. I just went in to the store where I purchased the phone and the Genius guy says “phones are not meant to be held that way on your ear and shoulder.” Seriously? That’s your response? Looking around I see at least four Apple store employees talking on iPhone 4′s holding them exactly that way… but I guess I’m just the paying customer/user and we are always wrong. So I’m sitting outside the store right now Googling this issue and sure enough the first site I go to has at least three other people posting the same problem. What I went through last week with AppleCare just to get this new phone correctly registered to me after the sales guy did it wrong in the store is whole different story. Apple customer service is starting to make Microsoft look good.

  • Bought my I Phone 4 last Friday. It is a huge disappointment. The signal bar is hardly above one even when I am not holding It. To use it, I have to hold it in a handkerchief. My previous phone, a Nokia 6300, was superb and never gave me signal strength problems in this area. I cannot get through to apple to order the free buffer. Have they deliberately switched off this facility? I also have a few dead spots. Most disappointing, is that it will not lock on to my hands- free system in my car, even though my car is wired to take any make of phone.

  • This phone is grossly overpriced and over-hyped

  • Mmmmm. Wow. First of all, to all of the people complaining about the Iphone4; yes, there are some issues with it as there are bugs with everything else that first comes out. Apple redesigned the Iphone4 and I like the design, and a lot of other people who have seen the 4 vs the 3gs said they like the design. Apple was also in a time constrained delema. The prototype that was accidently left out, could have been a marketing scam, but also they were in a rush due to new droids coming out that were surpassing the 3GS. I am not saying that was an excuse, but they know of the issues, and the reputation of Apple has always been to fix issues, unlike Microshaft. I have had some issues with the Iphone4 as well, but kept hanging in there with fixing issues. First, the signal strenth was sub-optimal. I fixed the issue with the Otterbox defender case for the Iphone4 (which is the best case I have ever used, even better the the Iphone3 cases). I also had an issue with the SIM card not reading. I took it to apple with the SIM error still on there, they fixed that, but still made appt to figure cause. When I came to appt 2 hrs later, I had the same SIM error message. They traded out the phone and have yet had another issue with it…knock on wood. As far as AT&T goes, I have enjoyed their business, a lot more friendly in customer service, then Verizon. Granted there are some dead spots, which needs to be addressed, but they’re the fastest network out there. I had the old 3G phone which the 4 surpassed in both speed and graphics. IMO, if you have 3gs, done get the 4. The only difference between the 3GS and 4 is processor speed, graphics quality, and some headaches while Apple fixes delema. I am happy with the Iphone4 even though there were some issues with it. To people having multiple issues (one guy said he had like 5 seperate issues), trade it for another one!!!! If you have Applecare, which would be not smart if you didn’t get it, then go to the Apple store, make an appointment, and trade it out! If you don’t have Applecare, then you’re totally at a disadvantage, unless your still under the original warranty. People complaining about AT&T services, wait until Verizon’s network goes down due to overload from users. I can see it now, that people are frustrated with AT&T’s network that when January comes and Verizon gets the Iphone4, people are going to go to Verizon. Then Verizon will be blacked-out just like AT&T did, but AT&T will still be on top. There are more people in the world that have the Iphones, that it’s no wonder why it went down. IMO, people that switch to Verizon, thinking that it is better, will make AT&T signal better (not as much usage):-)

  • This is exactly why I never buy any piece of electronics in the first few batches.

Perfect example, all the early XBox360s were melting discs and getting red rings within weeks. I waited, bought mine about 6 months after the release, and not only did I not have to stand in a long ass line at six in the morning, but it’s still working perfectly to this day (despite the fact that I use it A LOT, and do pretty much all of the things I was told would shorten its life).

I’ll wait and get the iphone 4 in a couple months, when all this stuff is sorted out.

  • Nathalie Lavoie

    Settings than General
    Network
    Cellular Data ON to OFF

  • Thank you Nathalie, but it didn’t work.

  • That’s quite worrying. Turning off the cellular Data doesn’t stop it using a data connection which is all this setting is meant for. It begs the question; Which other menu items claim to work but do nothing? Imagine switching flight mode on only to have your phone ring in the hospital…
