The case will be heard in Anging City in Anhui province. The man, a recent graduate, was not seeking monetary compensation, but wanted to be given the position. The man’s attorney said he would defend the plaintiff according to existing Chinese laws.

China already has laws and regulations prohibiting discrimination against individuals with HIV applying for jobs, stated attorney Zheng Jineng. However, practices by some government agencies and employers conflict directly with the law.

Jineng said the court accepting the case showed progression in the court system.

According to officials, 740,000 Chinese have HIV/AIDS.
