Best Picture Winner

Kathryn Bigelow had hardly walked off stage when Tom Hanks made the rushed announcement that the Hurt Locker was the Best Picture Winner, upsetting Avatar in nearly every category.  James Cameron looked slightly upset as the award was announced.

The film went from box-office bust, and had trouble finding a distributor originally, but was a critical success.  The screenwriter was a journalist in Iraq.

Other winners this evening:

Jeff Bridges for Best Actor in Crazy Heart.

Up for Best Animated Feature.

Christoph Waltz for best supporting actor in Inglorious Basterds.

Sandra Bullock for Best Actress.

Star Trek for Best Makeup.

El Secreto de sus Ojos, from Argentina, for best foreign film.

Monique for best supporting actress in Precious.

The song “the weary kind”  from Crazy Heart.

Meryl Streep again walked away emptied handed — she has been nominated 16 times.  Morgan Freeman as well lost out to Jeff Bridges.  Freeman, who was nominated for his roll as South African President Nelson Mandela in the film Invictus, had been nominated twice before.
