Best Director Winner

James Cameron, the pioneering creator of the blockbuster hit Avatar, is the front runner for Best Director Winner.  Kathryn Bigelow, for the Hurt Locker, Quentin Tarantino for Inglourious Basterds, Lee Daniels for Precious: Based on the Novel ‘Push’ by Sapphire and Jason Reitman for Up in the Air have also been nominated

The winner of this category could signal the winner of the best film category.  All of these films are also nominated for best film.  The best picture winner is thought to be a contest between Avatar and the Hurt Locker.

The first of the Oscar Winners received his little golden man about 20 minutes into the program.

Christoph Waltz won the first award for Best Supporting Actor in Inglorious Basterds.  He thanked Quentin Terrantino for his “Unorthodox” story telling style during his acceptance speech.  Amongst the other nominees, he beat out Matt Damon for his roll as the rugby captain of the South African Rugby team during reconciliation and the first years of the post-apartheid government and Nelson Mandela (played by Morgan Freeman).

Up was the second winner, winning Best Animated Feature.

The song “the weary kind” won from Crazy Heart for best song.

StStar Trek won for Best Makeup.

Many categories have yet to be announced: best picture, best actor, best actress, best supporting actress, best director, best foreign film, best adapted film.  Avatar and the Hurt Locker are the favorites for best picture; james cameron is the favorite for best director for the blockbuster hit Avatar; jeff bridges is the favorite for best actor; sandra bullock is one of the favorites for best actress and Monique is the favorite for best supporting actress.
