“Well the time has come” said barbara Streisand who was presenting the award to the Best Director Winner.  The lucky director?  Kathryn Bigelow, who became the first woman to win the little golden man in the category.  It was an interesting race, as James Cameron, nominated for Avatar in the same category, is her ex-husband.

James Cameron, the pioneering creator of the blockbuster hit Avatar, was the front runner for Best Director Winner.  Quentin Tarantino for Inglourious Basterds, Lee Daniels for Precious: Based on the Novel ‘Push’ by Sapphire and Jason Reitman for Up in the Air were also  nominated

Best Director Winner

The winner of this category could signal the winner of the best film category, which has generally been held to be a fight between the Hurt Locker and Avatar.  So far, the Hurt Locker has eeked out Avatar in the Oscar count.

The first of the Oscar Winners received his little golden man about 20 minutes into the program.

Christoph Waltz won the first award for Best Supporting Actor in Inglorious Basterds.  He thanked Quentin Terrantino for his “Unorthodox” story telling style during his acceptance speech.  Amongst the other nominees, he beat out Matt Damon for his roll as the rugby captain of the South African Rugby team during reconciliation and the first years of the post-apartheid government and Nelson Mandela (played by Morgan Freeman).

Up was the second winner, winning Best Animated Feature.

The song “the weary kind” won from Crazy Heart for best song.

StStar Trek won for Best Makeup.
