Avatar, the ultra-high budget epic movie from Director James Cameron has been named best movie at the Golden Globe awards in Los Angeles, California today.

Movie lovers braved howling winds and rain to attend the event, which took place in front of a host of stars.

Avatar, filmed over a number of years, has been seen as a huge project of the Director, Cameron, who was also honoured at the event. He not only directed, but edited and wrote the movie, which looks at life on a far away planet and the relationship between humans and their environment.

With such success at the Golden Globes, rumours are now spreading that Avatar will be the firm favourite to take the Oscar for best picture at the next movie awards ceremony.

Hollywood has been waiting eagerly for Avatar, and Cameron himself had been the punchline of a number of jokes related to his previous movies – he has been working on this largely computer generated animation as his number one project for years, and if it had been a flop it would have reflected very badly on the man who directed Titanic, the biggest grossing movie in the history of cinema.

Many will see vindication for Cameron in this award, and wait with baited breath for the Oscars ceremony later in 2010.
