Was Andy Irons’ death drug related? This is the question being asked by authorities investigating the sudden death of three-time world champion surfer Andy Irons. Andy Irons was found dead in a hotel room in Dallas, Texas on the 1st of November, a mere two days after withdrawing himself from a world tour event in Puerto Rico citing severe illness.

Whilst the star’s cause of death was not immediately known, a coroner’s report from the Tarrant County Medical Examiner’s Office could lead investigators to pin his sudden death on an overdose of methadone. According to reports that drug, and others, were found inside Andy Irons’ hotel room with the methadone inside the bottle of a prescription drug, zolpidem.
Andy Irons has previously withdrawn from surfing to recover from a drug problem and returned to competition this year but it seems that initial reports of his death due to Dengue Fever are now likely to be wide of the mark.
With Andy Irons dead, many in the surfing world are grief stricken, shocked by this unforeseen and tragic event. Whatever the answer – real sad loss for surfing.
I met the guy having a coffee opposite Snapper last year -very polite guy, looked completely happy with everything in his life. He was looking for to doing some tow ins that day.

It is a real shame if Andy’s Death was drug related. Andy Irons was a hero to many, he had so much to look forward to and will be surely missed by all which is live touched. RIP Andy Irons.
