Academy Awards Predictions

Roger Ebert, perhaps the most well known movie critic, thinks that the best picture race comes down to Avatar — the blockbuster futuristic sci-fi dystopian fantasy by James Cameron — and The Hurt Locker — about a bomb detonation squad in Iraq.  For Best Actor, he’s going with Jeff Bridges, and calls a toss-up between Sandra Bullock and Meryl Streep for leading lady.

In the E entertainment pre-show on the red carpet, Ryan Seacrest told Monique that she was a virtual lock on the Best Supporting Actress category.

CBS’ David Edelstein predicts much the same —  Jeff Bridges in Crazy Heart for best Actor, and calls a toss-up between Sandra Bullock in The Blind Side and Meryl Streep in Julie and Julia for best actress.  For Best Picture?  The respected critic thinks that the Hurt Locker and Avatar are running neck and neck for the coveted award.

In Las Vegas, where people who like to gamble, one can place bets on the awards ceremony this evening.  Jeff Bridges is the leader in Vegas odds, but the pools aren’t certain.  Bridges pays 8:1.  Bookies are more confident that Streep or Bullock will win the leading lady — each pays around 2:1.
